What was the Oakville Blob?

Season 9 episode 6 of the original Unsolved Mysteries always stuck with me. Mysterious goo falls from the sky containing white blood cells and stomach bacteria getting a bunch of people sick. What happened here? I personally think maybe it was a naturally occurring phenomenon and the substance was akin to the primordial soup. That or a weird government experiment. Are there any similar cases?
