Dozens of new emojis could start rolling out to devices and platforms in coming months, with icons ranging from expanded gender and skin tone options to a disco ball and trolls. On Thursday, Emojipedia released the 102 latest designs in consideration by Unicode.
Emoji Version 14.0, the next wave of iPhone emojis, is scheduled to be finalized in September 2021 - if approved, the emojis will arrive on most platforms by the middle of 2022.
More than half of the new emojis are skin tone variations for existing and newly created hand gestures. The handshake emoji has 15 different mixed skin tone additions.
The final draft includes gender-inclusive variations of the existing pregnant woman emoji, with new Pregnant Man and Pregnant Person icons. Emojipedia wrote that the designs "recognize that pregnancy is possible for some transgender men and non-binary people."
This move toward inclusivity is a continuation of Unicode's 2019 update when it first added a trans pride flag and emojis to represent people using wheelchairs and prosthetic limbs, Insider's Mary Meisenzahl reported last year.
Check out all 102 emoji designs here. You can vote for the design you are most looking forward to in the Most Anticipated Emoji award on "World Emoji Day," July 17.
