Apple is reportedly developing micro LED panels for the next version of Apple Watch. According to Digitimes, the Cupertino-based company could use micro LED panels in place of OLED as early as second half of 2017.
Apple Watch was announced at company’s special event in April 2015. The company recently dropped the price on its smartwatch and introduced new Nylon bands. Apple Watch was the first Apple product to adopt OLED panels.
Apple’s use of micro LED panels could be bolstered by its acquisition of US based micro-LED developer LuxVue Technologies. Apple had set up a lab in northern Taiwan for R&D of new display technology, reports Digitimes.
The Digitimes further reports that
micro LED panel in size ranges from 1 micron to 100 micron and
currently have a production cost higher than that of OLED panels. Apple
using micro LED panels could mean a slimmer and more battery efficient
Apple Watch in near future.
We’ll have to wait and see if a new Apple Watch is launched in September with the iPhone 7 as well.
