Reboot
If you have not rebooted your computer recently. Try rebooting it,  before you follow any of the below mentioned ways.

Background programs

One of the most common reasons for a computer running slow is some programs running in the background. Go to “Task manager” and  Remove or disable any programs that are running in the background or the programs that start up when you start your computer. Start up apps decrease the boot speed thus spoiling your experience.
Make sure you don’t have any Anti-virus scanners running in the background. This can have a serious effect on the overall performance of the computer. Just allow the scan to complete and then stop it, your computer will be faster than before.

Delete temp files

When your computer runs programs, temporary files are created and stored on the hard drive. By deleting these temp files you can help improve your computer performance.
First, go to the Windows Disk Cleanup utility to delete temporary files that are no longer needed on the computer.

Free hard drive space

Make sure that there is at least 200-500MB of hard drive space is free. This available space allows the computer to have the swap file to increase in size, also room for temporary files.

Scan for malware and viruses

Malware and spyware have become a major problems now. If you are infected by a malware it will effect your performance for sure. Find if your computer infected with a malware or virus and install an Anti-malware or Anti-Virus software.
Other worth checking techniques if your computer running slow are:
Hardware Conflicts: If the device manager has has any issues, it might reduce the performance of the computer.

If Internet access is slow in your computer, just make sure all the browser plugins are up-to-date. You can also try disabling browser plug-ins and see if any one of them is the result of the laptop lag.
Update your drivers: Make sure all the device drivers in your computer are up-to-date. Update the drivers as soon as possible, especially the latest video drivers. Having out of date drivers can cause an assortment of issues, including slow performance of computer.
Memory Upgrade: If you are using your current computer for more than 2 years, you may want to upgrade it’s memory.A minimum of 2 GB of RAM is needed for a 64-bit computer. By having enough memory for programs to run in the memory, your computer now will not need to swap information stored in the memory to the swap file.
