President Donald Trump indicated he would not construct a Trump Tower in Greenland after he reportedly expressed interested in buying the Denmark island.
"I promise not to do this to Greenland," Trump tweeted in a caption of an image with a golden Trump Tower.
The meme circulated on social media after numerous reports suggested he was interested in purchasing the land, which is inhabited by roughly 56,000 people. The president's son Eric Trump also shared the meme on Monday.
Trump discussed his interest in the purchase, which was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on Thursday. Trump described the possibility on Monday as "strategically ... interesting."
"It's just something we talking about," Trump told reporters. "Denmark essentially owns it. We're good allies with Denmark. We protected Denmark like we protect large portions of the world, so the concept came up."
Trump reportedly asked his staff to research whether the purchase was viable. The land is also home to the US's Thule Air Base, which conducts surveillance of the northern polar region.
